This is Abby. She is a 14 month old Doberman Pinscher who recently came in and was spayed. Abby however, has a condition known as Von Willebrand’s disease. Von Willebrand’s disease is a condition where the body lacks an essential component of blood clotting. This condition is common in Doberman Pinschers and luckily Abby had been tested prior to surgery. She was found to have very low levels of Von Willebrand factor. Abby was given a transfusion of fresh frozen plasma (a blood product that contains Von Willebrand factor) before her surgery and was spayed laparoscopically to minimize bleeding. Her procedure went well and she recovered uneventfully. Congratulations Abby on being this month’s Pet of the Month.
